Dear mom,
Both you and dad tried your best to try to keep my self-esteem up. It just never worked because I was so caught up in what kids at school say. In middle school, I felt like I was always trying to prove myself to people just because of my weight which was very weird if I think about it now. Yes many girls go through this too growing up and I really wouldn't wish that feeling on my worst enemy. I want you plus sized girls to know that, just because society has a different picture doesn't mean your picture has to be the same. Embracing being different, you stand out more and that is a blessing in disguise. I didn't understand the blessing of being a plus size girl until I got into my Sophomore year of high school, I started to get many compliments but it did not boost my self esteem.
It was not until my senior year where my self esteem began to change. The "Fat girl jokes" did not faze me anymore. I loved the attitude I was having towards the whole thing. It made my life a lot easier. You never know now how much something impacted you until you sit back and think about how it once fazed you. Writing this letter to you is the Nia with confidence, the Nia who is under construction but also the Nia that has her days. I want to be able to help other people. I want to start a plus size group-this would help to increase my self esteem and other girls too. We are bombarded by advertisements daily that tell us we are not beautiful but we are. I feel like you would be a good partner in this because you want young girls to love themselves.
I feel like in today's society we are pressured to be perfect but we can't be. We don't need to be. Thanks for taking the time out to listen to my thoughts. I knew you would understand I just never knew how to fully tell you. Thank you for loving me so completely.
Love,
Nia
