"I always try to come to class as much as I can. I think about the community we have in Umoja and every time I miss class someone always tells me what we missed and that I was missed. I always feel welcomed." Melanie Williams

"That is why Black students need Umoja. We go through racism and discrimination on a daily basis. Those experiences in and of themselves will impact the way we can focus in some classes. In a traditional class there is no time to call a "porch" or just talk with each other or the instructor about events that impact how we feel. We do have a lot of successes."
