A Look at Studio Ghibli Films and "The Wind Rises"
By Siam Lian
Studio Ghibli is an animation studio almost everyone knows. Its easily one of the top best animation studios, along side such like Pixar. Whether you believe Studio Ghibli is better or worse than Pixar, or any other studio, its safe to say its easily a top studio. With movies such as My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and many many more, Studio Ghibli has created and brought beautiful stories to life. In 2013, The Wind Rises was released, making it there 20th movie, 28 years after the studio’s founding. The movie was based on the real-life Jiro Horikoshi, and although it’s a movie based on reality, it keeps the same fantasy and unreal charm all the movies before had. The movie never once let down, the film was visually beautiful and exciting. The movie tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed some fighter planes for Japan in WWII. Without getting into spoilers, the film sets around the mid 1900s, around the time of WWII. It starts a little before, while Jiro is still a child, obsessed with planes.
We then see him grown, and now a plane designer. The whole story tells and teaches us about him and his passion for planes. Throughout the movie, we see around 3 dreams. The dream scenes were mesmerizing. They were gorgeous, and I encourage you to watch the movie because I can’t even begin to write how beautiful it was.
The movie was nothing short of amazing, the bittersweet ending, the beautiful love story in-between, the lesson of following dreams, and the fantastic art, the movie had everything all great Studio Ghibli movies had. To me, "The Wind Rises", is one of those movies you have to experience at least once.

BTS’s "Like": by Kyi Oo
Among bangers and bangers, this is one of their best songs. Sadly, there is no music video but the song itself is enough. The vocals? A solid 10/10, no question. The rap? 10/10. Everything I want in a song is there. Romance? Jealousy? Hints of the break-up? All there to stir up the emotions! As sad as it sounds, the song sounds light-hearted and happy, but the lyrics are where the emotions are, but don’t worry the song is in Korean and unless you understand or put translations on, you’ll be dancing and bopping your head along to the song.
Sadly, there is no music video but there is still choreo and live performances you can watch! Bedside the song, BTS is the world’s largest group and have many accomplishments. As of November, they have sold over 32.7 million albums sold worldwide, they have 45,077,903 monthly listeners, 465 awards (wins) and 673 nominations. This is just a small portion of their accomplishment and acknowledgements.
This song was released back in 2013 and is part of their debut mini album “2 COOL 4 SKOOL”. This song was a part of their fourth album, “Skool Luv Affair” which was a repackage album and was labeled as “I Like it”. It was written by three of the seven members, and all three were rappers and they were Suga, Rap-Monster, and J-Hope. Other credits go to Slow Rabbit.
As soon as the starts, and they go:
“Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Wanna be loved (Yeah)”
My serotonin levels go up! Even based off of the first view vocals by Jungkook, you can easily tell that their vocals are angelic. The first rap is done by RM (Rap-Monster) and sometimes rap in K-Pop can sound a bit awkward, but all the raps done by BTS’s rap line flowed perfectly with the rest of the song. I would like to give a quick mention of J-Hope’s rap specifically because his rap was more upbeat compared to Suga and RM. (His rap starts at 2:51 and finishes off at around 3:07)
A lot of people don’t know the whole song but a very popular part of it is when they say:
“Don't wanna be fool, wanna be cool
Wanna be loved 너와의 same love (너와의 same love)
Baby, I want it”
It was trending a lot on TikTok. The only dislike (do you get the pun) about the song is that Jimin has very few lines, almost none, and the thing is that he is their lead vocalist.
Other than that, the song is a solid 4.9 stars in my book.
"Koe no katachi"
A Film Review by Fartun Dirif
Koe no Kachi also known as the silent voice was released on Oct 20 2017. Bullying's repercussions haunt a high school student years later, and over the course of two ambitiously overstuffed hours, in A Silent Voice (Koe no katachi), adapted from Yoshitoki Oima's popular manga series.
Shoya Ishida, a quiet adolescent, attempts to jump off the bridge at the start of the film. Soon after, we learn that Shoya terrorized a new classmate named Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf-mute girl who is gentle and kind even when she is the brunt of everyone's jokes, when he was in sixth grade.
Shoya has never been able to shake the bully label from his childhood, becoming an outcast in his own right who is now shunned by the rest of his school, Throughout the movie, the concept of karma always arises. He seeks out Shoko, whom he hasn't seen since they were children, in the hopes that she will forgive his heinous behavior. Their long and awkward friendship takes up the majority of the film, with the two damaged souls seeking solace in each other's company. Even though Shoya tries to learn sign language, communication between them is difficult, and the long-term effects of their trauma appear to leave wounds that never heal.
In the movie the koi fish are shown a lot and the reason why is because they symbolize something. Shoyo and Shoko always meet and return to the river to feed the Koi fish and there's a reason why. The koi fish are so important and there is a legend surrounding it "In China, a school of golden Koi fish swam upstream the Yellow River.
When the fish arrived at the waterfall, they were met by malicious demons who mopped and hid in it. Many of the fish fled, but after a hundred years, one fish managed to leap to the top of the waterfall, where he transformed into a dragon and entered the dragon's gate." Koi fish are frequently used as symbols of perseverance, strength, and overcoming obstacles.
At first, we see a small school of Koi, five gray and one colored, swimming away. Each Koi represented a different character in the story and how they all battled their demons. Shoyo and Shoko were represented by the colored Koi fish which represented their journey with suicuide, depression, bullying and them growing stronger and transforming into dynamic dragons
"Seaspiracy” -Muna Mohammed
"Seaspiracy" is a Netflix original film documentary that was released on March 24, 2021. I watched this documentary as soon as it was released because I was familiar with the director Ali Tabrizi. And I will be telling you what I thought about the movie and why it’s a must watch."Seaspiracy" is a wake-up call to all humans, it tells the viewer how serious climate change is and the huge changes that are already affecting our water. The film starts by giving us a tour of the ocean, shining light on everything from the importance of sharks to dolphins on our environment. It emphasizes how harmful commercial farming hurts marine life and human life. Then it moves to talking about data. For example, they talked a lot about how 2/3 of the oxygen on earth was made by the ocean. And how algae is to blame for producing a lot of oxygen. This film is an eye opener. And will for sure shock you with their findings. The film talks heavily on the corruption within commercial fishing industries. It goes deep down to how some organic and sustainable fishing companies lie about where they get their fish and if it was really grown sustainably. It also mentions how so many animals die from fishing nets and how fishing nets are more harmful to marine life than plastic bottles. The film then explores how eating less fish is the only way forward and how the only solution tooverfishing is to eat less fish. Choosing not to eat fish is good for the environment and marine life that are dependent on fish. This documentary is a must watch like I stated above, it’s streaming on Netflix right now. You should watch the film and let me know your opinions about it!
