Upward Bound at the University of Washington
Upward Bound (UB) is a federally-funded program that assists students in their pursuit of a high school diploma and prepares them to enter and complete a post-secondary education program. Housed in the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, UW’s program is one of over 826 Upward Bound programs in the United States.
Who We Serve:
UW Upward Bound serves qualified students at Seattle’s Franklin, Chief Sealth International and Cleveland High Schools; and students from Kent-Meridian High School who are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and/or will be the first in their family to complete a four-year college degree.
Summer Academy:
Each summer, Upward Bound students spend six weeks on the UW campus to experience the academic and social atmosphere of a major university. Students receive instruction in UW classrooms and enroll in language arts, math, foreign language, science and elective classes.
Elective Course for Summer Academy:
Creative Writing:
Ms. Miranda contact: mirang3@uw.edu
Led and compiled by full-time Writing Instructor Ms. Miranda this is a creative writing class where there is a form of writing for every student. In this class students can express themselves by choosing their own genre and style of writing. Students will attend workshops where they learn how to write poems, short stories, letters, write different forms of reviews (film, song or book review, etc.)
The best part is the students will choose which genre(s) they want to write. Ultimately, all student work will be presented to the community at large via a website or other publishing tools for students that want their work to be shared and celebrated with others.
